Bududa Students Thwart Headteacher's Arrest Over Alleged Illegal Fees

Students at Bududa Senior Secondary School took matters into their own hands on Thursday, successfully preventing the arrest of their headteacher, Nasibu Mutyaba.

Officials from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, accompanied by police, arrived at the school with the intention of apprehending Mutyaba. The headteacher is facing allegations of levying unauthorized school fees on students, despite Bududa Senior Secondary School being a government-aided institution.

Reports indicate that Minister of Local Government, Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, ordered the arrest. Barugahara has been touring Bududa district to address alleged corruption and mismanagement, and stated that charging fees in government-aided schools contradicts the policy of free education, designed to help underprivileged children.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that a large number of students gathered, surrounding the officials and demanding an explanation for Mutyaba’s intended arrest. The students reportedly managed to pull their headteacher away, overwhelming the arresting officers.

It remains unclear if authorities will attempt another arrest. The minister’s anti-corruption drive in the district has already led to the apprehension of seven district officials, including education officers and assistant resident district commissioners.

This incident highlights a tense situation regarding school funding and the enforcement of government educational policies in the region.
