Attorney General Greenlights Tooro Kingdom Coronation Amidst Succession Clarity

The Attorney General (AG), Sam Mayanja, has given the green light for the Tooro Kingdom to continue with preparations for the enthronement of its new king. The Tooro Kingdom Supreme Council has set September 29, 2026, as the date for the coronation of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, who will reign as Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, the 14th Omukama of Tooro.
This follows the recent passing of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. The AG’s clearance comes as no formal appeal challenging the succession has been filed in court. Mayanja stated that the kingdom authorities are free to proceed with the coronation arrangements.
In a legal opinion issued on September 12, the AG noted that any dispute concerning the validity of the late King’s will or the designated heir could only be resolved through the court system. He emphasized that until such a challenge is formally presented, the current plans can move forward. The AG’s office had previously addressed concerns raised by some members of the royal family and elders regarding the succession norms and the existence of a will.
Mayanja clarified that according to the Institution of Traditional or Cultural Leaders Act, if traditional dispute resolution mechanisms fail, the matter is then referred to the courts. As no such formal legal challenge has been lodged, the coronation can proceed as planned.
