Uganda's Hospitality Talent Showcased at Second Annual Skills Challenge

Aspiring chefs, baristas, and hospitality workers recently gathered in Jinja for the second Hospitality Skills Challenge, an event designed to elevate and assess the skills of Uganda’s emerging talent in the tourism and hospitality sector.

Over three days, students from numerous training institutions and universities competed across five key disciplines: Cookery, Pastry and Bakery, Restaurant Service, Rooms Division, and the newly introduced Barista and Mixology categories.

The “Fusion of Culture” themed event provided a crucial platform for students to demonstrate their learned competencies while engaging directly with seasoned industry professionals. Organizers highlighted the challenge’s role in building student confidence through masterclasses and career guidance, alongside the competitive elements.

A significant aspect of the competition was its judging panel, composed entirely of industry experts, ensuring that participants were evaluated against real-world professional standards. The expansion to include Barista and Mixology as a standalone category reflected a growing demand and interest in these specialized skills within Uganda.

Uganda Breweries Limited partnered to support the Barista and Mixology segment, offering capacity building and expertise. The competition format, particularly in mixology, moved beyond rote recipe following, testing contestants on creativity, technical knowledge, and presentation through classic cocktails, mystery basket challenges, and mocktail creation.

Beyond the contests, the event served as a vital networking hub, connecting students with mentors and potential employers. Organizers noted that several industry leaders identified promising individuals for future mentorship, underscoring the challenge’s success in bridging the gap between education and employment in the hospitality industry.
