Speaker Jacob Markson Oboth of the Ugandan Parliament has initiated efforts to forge deeper institutional connections with the United Kingdom’s House of Commons. The objective is to leverage the UK Parliament’s long-standing history and practices to inform ongoing reforms aimed at improving the management and operations of Uganda’s legislature.
During a meeting with Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the UK House of Commons, in London, Oboth highlighted the potential for Uganda to gain valuable insights. Their discussions focused on enhancing legislative accountability, promoting transparency, and strengthening parliamentary diplomacy between the two nations.
This engagement is part of Speaker Oboth’s broader agenda to revitalize Parliament’s systems, structures, and operational framework, which was historically modeled on the House of Commons. Oboth proposed the establishment of an inter-parliamentary network to foster cooperation in critical areas such as education, trade, and mining.
“This is about consolidating our efforts to reset, revive and rejuvenate the management and affairs of the Parliament of Uganda,” Oboth stated, emphasizing the desire to bring the two parliaments and nations closer through shared interests.
Sir Lindsay Hoyle expressed the UK Parliament’s willingness to support these endeavors, viewing the collaboration within the broader context of the Commonwealth. He suggested that such diplomatic exchanges could serve as a mechanism to strengthen the Commonwealth family and potentially encourage African nations to unite within the organization around a common agenda.
Since taking office, Speaker Oboth has been committed to restoring Parliament’s legacy, promising to rebuild public trust and enhance the institution’s image through accountability, transparency, and people-centered leadership. The recent discussions are expected to pave the way for future collaborations in governance, education, trade, and parliamentary administration.
