Two Election Petitions Dropped at Masaka High Court

Two separate election petitions concerning races in Rakai District have been withdrawn at the Masaka High Court. The cases involved the Buyamba Constituency parliamentary election and the Kyalulangira Town Council mayoral election, bringing an end to the legal challenges.

The first petition was filed by Amos Mandera, who had challenged the election of Gyaviira Ssemwanga for the Buyamba parliamentary seat. Mandera alleged that the election was compromised by irregularities and malpractices that impacted the results.

Mandera’s lawyer, Shem Ssengendo, informed Justice Bernard Namanya that his client had confidential reasons for withdrawing the petition. Ssengendo emphasized that the decision was made independently and not influenced by any settlement or compensation from the respondent. He also urged Mandera’s supporters to maintain unity.

In the second case, Julius Amanya withdrew his petition challenging the election of Alex Kamushana as the mayor of Kyalulangira Town Council. Amanya’s lawyer, Pius Kiryowa, stated that the withdrawal was aimed at fostering unity within Kyalulangira and ensuring residents receive services without continued political friction.

While Kamushana’s legal team, represented by Sam Ssekyewa, welcomed the withdrawal, they indicated an intention to seek compensation from the petitioner. The Masaka High Court continues to hear other election-related cases from the recent electoral cycle in the Greater Masaka region.
