Parliamentary Committee Evaluates UPDF Training Standards and Facilities

Parliament’s Defence and Internal Affairs Committee has embarked on a significant undertaking to scrutinize the training quality and facilities within the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF). This broad assessment encompasses critical aspects such as staffing, infrastructure development, curriculum relevance, and the crucial instructor-to-trainee ratios across various UPDF training establishments.

A key stop during this nationwide inspection was the National Defence College-Uganda (NDC-U) in Jinja. The committee’s Chairperson, Ms. Robinah Rwakojo Gureme, emphasized that the visit to NDC-U was specifically designed to evaluate the current training standards and ensure their alignment with national security objectives.

Brig. Gen. Alex Olupot, the Commandant of NDC-U, welcomed the parliamentary oversight, viewing it as a valuable opportunity for the college to demonstrate its accountability and receive constructive feedback. He highlighted the strategic importance of NDC-U in preparing senior military officers and national leaders to effectively address complex security and development challenges through a comprehensive, ‘whole-of-government’ approach.

Brig. Gen. Olupot further elaborated that NDC-U is actively enhancing its academic programs and research initiatives. The college is also focused on forging stronger collaborations with national and international universities, defense organizations, and other strategic bodies to broaden its educational reach and impact.

To cover the extensive scope of UPDF establishments, the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee has divided into two teams. These teams are simultaneously conducting inspections across the country. Upon completion of their respective visits, the teams are scheduled to reconvene. Their objective will be to consolidate all gathered findings and compile a comprehensive report containing recommendations for subsequent presentation to the full Parliament.
