The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) is embarking on a new initiative to tap into Uganda’s diaspora, aiming to expand its membership and increase retirement savings. This proactive approach is being driven by the fund’s observation that benefit payouts are consuming a substantial amount, approximately 70%, of its current contributions.
The NSSF recognizes the vast potential within the Ugandan population living and working abroad. By actively engaging with this demographic, the fund seeks to provide them with a secure avenue for saving towards their retirement, ensuring financial stability upon their return to Uganda. This outreach is expected to not only increase the fund’s assets under management but also broaden the reach of social security benefits.
This expansion into the diaspora market is seen as a critical step for NSSF’s long-term sustainability and growth. It offers a dual benefit: providing a valuable service to Ugandans abroad while simultaneously strengthening the NSSF’s financial reservoir. The fund plans to develop tailored products and communication strategies to effectively reach and cater to the unique needs of its overseas members.
As the NSSF continues to grow and mature, managing the balance between incoming contributions and outgoing benefit payments remains a key focus. Encouraging more Ugandans, both domestically and internationally, to join and contribute to the fund is paramount for ensuring its continued ability to provide adequate retirement income for all members.
