Navigating Kampala's Complex Intersections Safely

Kampala’s bustling roads present unique challenges for drivers, particularly at busy intersections and roundabouts. The potential for confusion and the need for split-second decisions can lead to dangerous situations if drivers are not careful.

Understanding traffic signals and signs is paramount. Red lights mean stop, yellow lights indicate caution and prepare to stop, and green lights allow passage, but only when it is safe to proceed. Drivers should never assume it is safe to go on a green light, as pedestrians or other vehicles might still be present.

Roundabouts require a specific approach. Drivers must yield to traffic already in the roundabout. It is important to signal your intention to enter and exit the roundabout. Avoid stopping inside the roundabout unless absolutely necessary, and always be aware of cyclists and motorcyclists who may be sharing the space.

When approaching any intersection, defensive driving is key. Scan for potential hazards, including pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles making unexpected maneuvers. Maintain a safe following distance from the vehicle in front of you, which provides more time to react to sudden stops.

At uncontrolled intersections, where there are no traffic lights or signs, the rule of first-come, first-served generally applies. If two vehicles arrive at the same time, the vehicle on the right has the right of way. However, it is always safer to make eye contact with other drivers and ensure they see you before proceeding.

Distracted driving, whether from mobile phones or other passengers, significantly increases the risk of accidents at intersections. Drivers must remain focused on the road and their surroundings to navigate these complex areas safely.
