Nameere Vows Stepped-Up Anti-Corruption Measures After 90 Days in Office

State Minister for Local Government Justine Nameere has marked her initial 90 days in office with a commitment to enhancing accountability and combating corruption. Since taking office on June 12, Nameere has emphasized direct engagement with communities, viewing her role as crucial for ensuring government programs reach their intended beneficiaries at the grassroots level.

Nameere highlighted that her background in journalism and law has provided her with a deep understanding of citizen concerns, enabling her to connect with communities impacted by public service delivery. She noted that many government resources, earmarked for initiatives like the Parish Development Model and Emyoog, have reportedly been mismanaged or diverted, hindering their effectiveness.

In response, the Ministry of Local Government has launched a robust campaign to expose corruption and bolster accountability. This initiative includes addressing issues of absenteeism and underperformance among local government officials, which Nameere believes directly impedes service delivery.

The ministry is adopting a more proactive approach, with ministers and technical teams conducting on-the-ground inspections instead of solely relying on district-submitted reports. This hands-on method aims for a broader transformation of local governance. Whistleblower information and public feedback have been instrumental in identifying discrepancies that might not appear in official documents.

Despite facing some resistance from those affected by these intensified inspections, Nameere stated that the ministry remains steadfast in its pursuit of accountability and the recovery of misused public funds. The ongoing anti-corruption efforts have already led to investigations and disciplinary actions in several districts. Nameere also issued a stern warning to contractors and technical officers involved in government projects, cautioning against poor workmanship and delays, with potential consequences including contract termination, prosecution, and blacklisting.

Reflecting on her first three months, Nameere reiterated her dedication to strengthening field supervision and ensuring government resources effectively serve the public. This commitment underscores her belief in a government that remains closely connected to its citizens.
