Mulago National Referral Hospital has undertaken significant upgrades to its Stanfield Paediatric Infectious Diseases Ward, aiming to bolster infection control and elevate the standard of care for young patients.
The renovation addresses the ward’s previously poor physical condition, which was a concern given the critical nature of the infectious diseases treated there.
Now, the ward features distinct areas for different categories of patients. This segregation is crucial for preventing the spread of infections, particularly among children who may already have compromised immune systems.
According to Lucy Mukiibi, the Deputy In-charge of Stanfield Ward, the new layout allows for the separation of children based on their specific conditions. “We have a ward that’s segregated, we have an infectious disease side, we have a general side,” Mukiibi explained.
This strategic division includes dedicated sections for illnesses like chickenpox, Mpox, tuberculosis, and viral hemorrhagic fevers. The goal is to minimize cross-contamination and ensure that vulnerable children are not exposed to additional pathogens.
The hospital anticipates that these improvements will not only strengthen infection prevention measures but also foster an environment conducive to specialized paediatric care. The upgraded infrastructure is expected to lead to better health outcomes for the children receiving treatment at the ward.
