Linnya Step Campaign Tackles Boda Boda Safety

The Linnya Step Road Safety Campaign has entered its second phase, intensifying efforts to promote safer road usage and encourage a shift in behavior among Uganda’s extensive boda boda community. The initiative brings together various stakeholders, including road safety advocates, policymakers, and media partners, all united by the common goal of reducing road accidents.

During the campaign’s launch, Hon. Nathan Byanyima, Chairperson of the Infrastructure Committee, directly addressed boda boda riders. He stressed the critical importance of adhering to traffic regulations, moderating speed, and refraining from riding under the influence of alcohol. Byanyima also highlighted the necessity for riders to wear helmets and maintain a professional demeanor when serving passengers, emphasizing that riders are integral to the livelihoods of a significant portion of Uganda’s workforce.

Peter Mungoma, CEO of Capital FM, called for greater mutual respect on the roads, noting that boda boda riders are often unfairly singled out for incidents. He urged other road users to recognize that mistakes are not exclusive to riders and advocated for a more understanding approach.

Mable Tomusange, Managing Consultant at Consult Afrika Usalama, proposed practical solutions, including the potential for dedicated boda boda lanes to better segregate them from other traffic. She underscored that sustained improvements in road safety hinge on fundamental behavioral changes among all road users and the implementation of evidence-based policies.

The campaign plans to continue its outreach through various awareness activities, targeting both riders and the general public with the ultimate aim of fostering safer roads throughout Uganda.
