The “Linnya Step with Safety” campaign has officially commenced its second edition in Uganda, rallying stakeholders under the banner “Every Journey Matters, Every Step Counts.” This initiative aims to foster greater road safety by bringing together motorists, boda boda riders, pedestrians, community leaders, and media representatives to champion responsible conduct on the roads.

Peter Mungoma, CEO of Capital Radio Group, implored media outlets to move beyond simply reporting accidents and to actively educate the public on prevention strategies. He stressed the importance of “stigmatizing bad behavior like do not drink and drive” and encouraging the consistent use of safety gear such as helmets.

Public health expert Mable Tomusange underscored the necessity of evidence-based interventions and a focus on behavioral change. “We need to change mindsets and habits to reduce accidents through behaviour change,” she stated. Tomusange also advocated for the integration of technology and improved infrastructure, including dedicated lanes for boda boda riders, to enhance safety and traffic management.

Presiding over the launch, Nathan Byanyima, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Infrastructure, urged individuals to embrace personal responsibility. “Drive on sight. Stop the ‘I don’t care’ attitude today,” he advised, specifically calling on boda boda riders to moderate their speed and motorists to avoid drinking and driving.

Byanyima also encouraged boda boda riders to maintain professionalism and cleanliness. Furthermore, he appealed to the general public to actively assist victims of road accidents rather than merely passing by, emphasizing that “When you find somebody has had an accident, stop and help out.”

The campaign’s re-launch comes in response to ongoing concerns about the high rate of road fatalities in Uganda, with organizers committed to promoting safer road use through continued collaboration and advocacy.
