Karamoja Faces Worsening Food Insecurity, Threatening Humanitarian Crisis

The Karamoja region of Uganda is once again confronting significant food shortages, with current assessments indicating that 673,000 people, representing 42% of the population, are experiencing crisis-level food insecurity or worse. This dire situation is projected to persist through February 2027, with approximately 118,000 individuals facing emergency levels of hunger.
Despite these alarming figures, the region is not officially classified as experiencing famine. However, this recurring vulnerability is a long-standing issue, exacerbated by previous famines and droughts, including a recent hunger crisis in 2022 that reportedly led to over 2,200 deaths.
The severity of food insecurity in Karamoja is deeply tied to the region’s traditional food system, which centers on sorghum and cattle. Sorghum serves as the primary staple, prepared as ‘atapa’ and typically consumed with bean sauce or leafy vegetables. Cattle play a vital role, providing milk in both fresh and fermented forms, and even bloodletting, where blood is consumed raw or mixed with other foods.
The seasonal availability of food significantly impacts daily life. Following harvests, food is more abundant, allowing families to eat more frequently. As stored grains diminish, the number of daily meals decreases, often reducing to just one evening repast. This cyclical pattern means that a single bad harvest can quickly spiral into a severe humanitarian crisis if not adequately addressed.
