Hoima Gears Up for AFCON 2027 with Major Roadworks Contract Signing

Works and Transport Minister Fred Byamukama announced that a contractor has been selected to undertake extensive road improvements in Hoima City, in preparation for the nation’s co-hosting of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The contract, expected to be signed imminently, will cover more than 34 kilometers of urban roads. The selected contractor will soon commence work on site, marking a significant step in the country’s readiness for the continental football tournament.

Minister Byamukama assured residents of Hoima and the broader Bunyoro region of the government’s commitment to completing the necessary infrastructure. He highlighted that the road projects aim to enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion within Hoima City during the AFCON event.

The procurement process for these roadworks experienced delays due to concerns over initial cost proposals. Byamukama revealed that the President intervened, rejecting an initial bid of Shs8.5 billion per kilometer and approving a revised target of Shs5.5 billion per kilometer, emphasizing the government’s efforts to curb corruption.

“We want to thank the President for accepting to have Hoima City host the AFCON. About the roads, there was a lot of corruption. They had put the cost of each kilometre at Shs8.5 billion, which the President rejected and put it at Shs5.5 billion,” Byamukama stated.

The upcoming road upgrades will include tarmacking, installation of modern street lighting, and improved drainage systems. These enhancements are crucial as Hoima is slated to host matches at the newly prepared Hoima City Stadium.

In addition to the road infrastructure, Byamukama confirmed that the first phase of the Kabalega International Airport is complete, with preparations underway for the construction of a passenger terminal. The airport will be tested on September 29 with a maiden Uganda Airlines flight, carrying the national team from Entebbe to Kabalega for an AFCON qualifier against Libya. Uganda is co-hosting AFCON 2027 with Kenya and Tanzania.
