Fifty adolescents, aged between 13 and 18, have benefited from a comprehensive two-day training program in Bukamba, Kayunga District, focusing on enhancing their mental health, self-esteem, and essential life skills.

Under the theme “Healing Minds, Giving Hope,” the workshop provided a secure space for young individuals to openly discuss their challenges and acquire practical guidance. Sessions covered a wide array of topics, including confidence-building led by Hassan Ssengendo of PurpleMinds Foundation, and mental health awareness facilitated by Mindbus Foundation through engaging activities like drawing and sharing circles.

Nurses from Kayunga Referral Hospital delivered vital information on sexual and reproductive health, addressing age-appropriate concerns such as hygiene, preventing early pregnancy and marriage, and responsible decision-making. Additionally, participants received financial literacy training from Gava Fard of Amga Cleaning Solutions, emphasizing the importance of early financial management.

Personal safety, children’s rights, and the impact of peer influence were discussed by Police Officer Swaleh Mutiima, who encouraged the youth to understand their rights and responsibilities. The program also incorporated discussions on climate action.

Many participants reported increased confidence and a greater ability to express their feelings. Shafik Mugabi shared, “I learned that I don’t need to be like anyone else. I just need to be the best version of me.” Sumaya Nansamba added, “I felt happy because someone listened to me.”

The initiative was supported by various organizations including Mindbus Foundation, Kayunga Referral Hospital, Uganda Police, and several local businesses. PurpleMinds Foundation aims to expand this program to reach 100 young people in the next school holiday and is seeking further support.
