EAC Trade Surges to Shs204 Trillion, Bloc Achieves Trade Surplus

The East African Community (EAC) has experienced a remarkable upswing in its trade activities, reaching a total value of $52.3 billion (approximately Shs203.97 trillion) in the second quarter of 2026. This figure represents a substantial increase of over one-third compared to previous periods.
The bloc has successfully transitioned from a trade deficit to a surplus, largely attributed to a significant rise in the export of minerals and agricultural products. This positive economic trend underscores the growing strength and export capabilities within the EAC member states.
Trade within the Community and with other major African and global markets has also shown consistent expansion. Despite the establishment of a common market on paper, challenges such as fragmented policies, differing currencies, and persistent trade barriers continue to impact the practical realization of seamless trade integration among partner states.
The EAC Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania, announced the trade figures on September 16, 2026, highlighting the bloc’s robust economic performance during the reviewed period.
