Cricket Cranes Edge Closer to Continent Cup Final After Dominating Botswana

The Uganda Cricket Cranes are on the cusp of reaching the ILT20 Continent Cup final following a hard-fought five-wicket win against Botswana in Kigali. This victory, their fifth in six games, propelled Uganda to 10 points in the standings, trailing only undefeated Kenya.

Chasing a modest target of 119, the Cranes reached 125 for five with five wickets in hand, demonstrating their batting prowess. The win was bolstered by a strong net run rate, but their qualification hinges on the outcomes of their upcoming matches against hosts Rwanda and Kenya.

Uganda’s bowlers set the tone after captain Riazat Ali Shah chose to bowl. Matthew Musinguzi struck with the first delivery, setting the stage for a disciplined bowling performance that saw Botswana struggle. Despite efforts from Vinoo Balakrishnan (36) and Abel Botlhe Keganne (42), Botswana closed on 119 for eight.

Joseph Baguma and Cosmas Kyewuta were the standout bowlers for Uganda, each claiming three wickets. In the chase, Robinson Obuya’s aggressive 32 and Charles Musemeza’s match-winning 39 provided the foundation. Gerald Olipa’s quickfire 19 ensured Uganda crossed the finish line with ease.

Charles Musemeza was recognized as the Player of the Match for his significant contribution. The Cranes now look ahead to crucial encounters with Rwanda and Kenya, which will decide their fate in the tournament.
