Church Schools Advised to Integrate Vocational Training

Bishop Moses Banja of Namirembe Diocese has urged schools run by the church to actively embrace vocational education. He highlighted that providing practical skills is crucial for enhancing students’ employment prospects and empowering them to create their own job opportunities after completing their studies.

This initiative aligns with the government’s new curriculum, which aims to equip learners with a diverse set of skills relevant to life beyond the classroom. Bishop Banja noted that vocational training is particularly vital in tackling unemployment by imparting hands-on abilities that can lead to self-employment or securing jobs.

The Bishop made these remarks during a visit to Mengo Senior School, accompanied by Bishop Nathan Ahimbisibwe of South Ankole Diocese. During the visit, they toured ongoing developments, including new classroom blocks and programs focused on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

Certificates were awarded to students who successfully completed various TVET courses, alongside recognition for high academic achievers in the Senior Four and Senior Six examinations. Bishop Banja stated that these vocational certificates serve as a significant step towards building a secure future for the students.

He commended Mengo Senior School for its commitment to practical skills and adherence to the new curriculum, recognizing its effectiveness in imparting knowledge beyond theoretical academics. He also appealed to parents to support schools offering vocational programs by contributing to the resources needed for effective practical learning.

The visit also included the rewarding of top-performing students in the 2025 Senior Four and Senior Six exams with cash prizes totaling over Shs11 million, with specific emphasis on science subject excellence. Additionally, Bishop Banja presented a vehicle to the school chaplain and officially opened a new school gate.

Mengo Senior School’s head teacher, Dr. Grace Sebanakitta Nantajja, affirmed the school’s dedication to producing well-rounded graduates prepared to meet the demands of the new curriculum by blending academic rigor with practical skill development.
