Besigye Trial: Key Witness Andrew Wilson Concludes Testimony, Labels Nairobi Operation a 'Sting'

Andrew Wilson, the central prosecution witness in the treason case against Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused, has finished giving his evidence after several weeks on the stand. His testimony concluded on Thursday following re-examination by the state.

During this final phase, Wilson offered a new explanation for how two audio-recording devices, allegedly used during a key operation in Nairobi, came into his possession. Previously, he had stated he received them from Kenyan police after the arrests of Besigye and Obeid Lutale on November 16, 2024. However, on Thursday, he clarified that one device was given to him by an associate present at the meeting, who had concealed it in their coat. Wilson also stated he found the second device in a flower pot where he had initially placed it.

Wilson maintained his assertion that the Nairobi events appeared staged. He reiterated his earlier testimony that the apartment where a meeting was to occur had been pre-arranged and that he found loaded pistols inside upon entering. When questioned directly, Wilson affirmed his certainty that the Kenyan meeting was deliberately orchestrated as a law enforcement operation, calling it a “sting”.

Wilson’s evidence has been critical to the prosecution’s case, relying on his accounts of alleged meetings held by Besigye and others in Nairobi, Athens, and Geneva between 2023 and 2024. He presented various covert recording devices, including cameras and audio equipment, which the prosecution claims captured discussions about a plot to overthrow the government. The defense has challenged the authenticity and identification aspects of these recordings.

The events in Nairobi are particularly significant due to their direct link to Besigye’s arrest and the evidence reportedly found at the scene. The prosecution alleges Besigye and Lutale held meetings to mobilize resources and acquire weapons for this purpose, a claim the accused deny.

Wilson’s testimony also faced extensive cross-examination regarding his accounts, equipment, and evidence handling. He previously stated he was self-taught and lacked formal academic qualifications. With Wilson’s testimony now complete, the prosecution is expected to present its next witness, whose identity has not yet been revealed.
