US Imposes Visa Restrictions on South African Officials Over Discrimination Allegations

The United States has announced new visa restrictions aimed at South African officials, citing concerns over alleged discrimination against the country’s white minority. This move escalates ongoing tensions between the two nations.

The US administration has previously expressed criticism regarding South Africa’s policies designed to address racial inequality, arguing that these measures unfairly target Afrikaners, descendants of Dutch and French settlers. However, South Africa has consistently denied these allegations.

South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Co-operation, Ronald Lamola, expressed “concern” over the announcement. A statement from his ministry indicated that the US decision aligns with a “mischaracterization of South Africa’s domestic policies by fringe groups” who falsely represent themselves as spokespersons for minorities and Afrikaners.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the South African government had not sufficiently addressed prior concerns. He elaborated that the visa restrictions would affect individuals involved in promoting “race-based discrimination, incite violence, or enable land confiscation without compensation.”

No specific individuals have been named as being subject to these restrictions. Relations between the US and South Africa have reportedly deteriorated since early last year, marked by actions such as aid cuts and the expulsion of the South African ambassador, alongside an offer of “refuge” to white South Africans claiming persecution.

The South African government continues to reject accusations of persecuting white individuals or engaging in land confiscation without fair compensation.
