A wave of fear and uncertainty has gripped communities around Kempton Park, a town northeast of Johannesburg, following the discovery of multiple women’s bodies over the past two months. The most recent grim findings occurred on Tuesday, bringing the total number of investigated deaths to eight. Authorities have noted that the majority of the victims were found partially or fully unclothed, deepening the public’s concern.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has publicly condemned the incidents, stating, “These incidents are causing fear and uncertainty in our communities, and especially among women.” He assured the public that the government is committed to a comprehensive investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible.
While police are not currently categorizing the events as the work of a single serial killer, they are actively exploring the possibility of a coordinated group behind the killings. “It could be that it’s a copycat crime that is happening right here, but so far, no linkages as yet,” commented police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe.
To aid the investigation, a reward of 400,000 rand (approximately $24,500 USD or £18,000 GBP) has been offered for information that could lead to a significant breakthrough.
