Parliament Reviews UPDF Training Standards at National Defence College

The Defence and Internal Affairs Committee of Parliament has embarked on a comprehensive assessment of training standards within the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF). This nationwide inspection includes a close examination of staffing, infrastructure, curricula, and instructor-to-trainee ratios at various UPDF institutions.

The committee’s focus this week was on the National Defence College-Uganda (NDC-U) in Jinja. Chairperson Robinah Rwakojo Gureme stated that the inspection seeks to ensure the training provided at NDC-U aligns with the current needs of Uganda’s defence and security sector.

“The inspection of NDC-U is to assess the quality and accuracy of training offered at the UPDF training institutions, including infrastructure, staffing levels, curriculum and instructor-training ratios,” Rwakojo explained. The committee has divided into teams to cover multiple UPDF establishments across the country before compiling their findings into a report for Parliament.

Brig Gen Alex Olupot, Commandant of NDC-U, welcomed the parliamentary oversight, viewing it as an opportunity for the college to demonstrate accountability and receive constructive recommendations. He emphasized the importance of Parliament’s engagement in ensuring public resources allocated to defence and security are used effectively.

“Your presence here is a demonstration of the importance that the Parliament of Uganda attaches to national defence, security, professional military education and the effective use of public resources,” Olupot remarked.

NDC-U plays a crucial role in training senior military officers and national leaders in strategic analysis and decision-making on complex security and development issues. The college is also actively expanding its academic programs, research initiatives, and fostering collaborations with both local and international universities and defense organizations, aiming to develop leaders with a broad perspective on national challenges.
