Opposition MPs Locked Out of Lubowa Hospital During Oversight Visit

Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, along with a contingent of opposition Members of Parliament, faced an unexpected obstacle on Wednesday: a locked gate at Lubowa Specialized Hospital. The group arrived for a planned oversight visit to assess the progress of the facility, which has been under construction since 2019 and is reportedly about 70% complete.

According to Ssenyonyi, the MPs had secured prior authorization from the Minister of Health for their inspection. However, upon reaching the hospital, they found the main entrance secured and no personnel available to grant them access or provide an explanation.

The legislators were compelled to wait outside, seeking clarity on the reasons for their exclusion, especially given the official clearance they believed they possessed.

Lubowa Specialized Hospital is intended to offer advanced medical services upon its completion, which is anticipated in December. The incident has sparked concerns regarding the accessibility of public projects for parliamentary oversight bodies, highlighting potential challenges in ensuring accountability and monitoring development progress.

Further action is expected from Ssenyonyi and the MPs as they seek official clarification from the relevant authorities regarding the circumstances of their denied access and the overall status of the hospital project.
