MTN Foundation Expands Digital Innovation with Second Hub at Busitema University

MTN Foundation Uganda, in collaboration with the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance and Centenary Technology Services, has inaugurated its second MTN ACE Spark Innovation Hub at Busitema University. This initiative is a significant step in the foundation’s three-year, UGX 4 billion investment plan to establish four regional digital innovation centers at public universities and upgrade the National ICT Innovation Hub in Kampala.
The newly opened hub at Busitema follows the successful launch of a similar facility at Kabale University. Both hubs are equipped with modern digital infrastructure to provide access to critical future-fit skills. These include Data Science & Analytics, Software Development & Coding, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, Cybersecurity, and Cloud Computing, delivered through the MTN Skills Academy in partnership with Anischolar. The initiative also offers collaborative workspaces and mentorship opportunities.
Francis Gimara, a Trustee of the MTN Foundation Uganda, emphasized that these hubs are designed to be vibrant centers for experimentation and collaboration. “We at MTN Foundation Uganda believe that everyone should not only enjoy the benefits of a modern, connected life but also be empowered to drive innovation and entrepreneurship that transforms the communities in which we operate,” Gimara stated. He further highlighted that the program aims to empower over 20,000 students and community members with digital skills and mentorship to address local challenges.
The launch aligns with Uganda’s growing need for digital literacy and entrepreneurial skills among its youth, who constitute over 75% of the population. Dr. Aminah Zawedde, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, affirmed the importance of investing in youth, stating, “These hubs equip young people with the skills and support needed to innovate, create jobs, and contribute meaningfully to the digital economy.”
Future hubs are planned for Gulu and Soroti Universities, completing the network of strategically located innovation centers across the country. The program’s broader impact is seen in its previous investment of over UGX 4 billion in digital capability development, supporting innovations like KaCyber and RideLink developed at the Nakawa ICT Innovation Hub.
