Minister Babalanda Encourages Ugandan Diaspora to Invest Beyond Remittances

Minister for the Presidency, Milly Babalanda, has issued a compelling appeal to Ugandans residing overseas, urging them to contribute more than just financial remittances to their homeland. She called for the investment of their valuable skills, advanced technology, strategic partnerships, and capital to fuel Uganda’s ongoing economic transformation.

Speaking at a conference in Kampala themed “Bridging Worlds: Diaspora & Forced Migrants for Shared Prosperity,” Babalanda acknowledged the significant financial contributions from the diaspora, which have seen a notable increase. However, she emphasized that the nation requires a deeper level of engagement.

“That contribution is important, but I challenge the diaspora to think beyond remittances,” Babalanda stated. She highlighted the critical need for the transfer of knowledge, technology, and expertise, particularly as Uganda embarks on a new phase of economic growth. The minister stressed that the diaspora’s international networks and specialized skills are invaluable assets for the country.

The conference brought together a diverse group, including heads of diplomatic missions, government officials, representatives from the diaspora and forced migrant communities, and civil society organizations.

Babalanda also addressed legal compliance, urging Ugandans abroad to adhere to the laws of their host countries. Simultaneously, she encouraged forced migrants in Uganda to regularize their legal status with the authorities. The government, she assured, remains committed to supporting Ugandans facing difficulties abroad, citing recent interventions to assist those allegedly exploited in South Africa.

Furthermore, the minister reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to its open-door refugee policy, acknowledging the country’s significant role as a major refugee host in Africa. She concluded by highlighting the efforts of the Office of the President Diaspora Affairs in fostering engagement between the diaspora and various government bodies.
