Urban leaders in and around Kampala are embarking on a collaborative project to tackle the growing challenge of waste management while simultaneously exploring new energy sources. The “Turning Waste into Energy” initiative brings together mayors and local government officials to devise innovative strategies for converting refuse into electricity and other useful byproducts.
Supported by ICLEI Africa, a global network dedicated to fostering sustainable urban development, this partnership was formally launched during a meeting in Kampala. The initiative’s core objective is to reframe waste, often seen as a problem, into an opportunity for resource recovery and energy production.
Kampala’s Lord Mayor, Ssalongo Eng. Ronald Nsubuga Balimwezo, spearheaded the discussions, emphasizing the potential for waste-to-energy programs to address critical issues in urban areas. Mayors acknowledged that such projects could significantly improve waste disposal methods, leading to cleaner and more sustainable city environments.
Officials like John Bosco Sserunkuuma Kaanakambaata, the Mayor of Nansana Municipality, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative. He highlighted the importance of inter-municipal cooperation in making the waste-to-energy concept a practical reality for their communities, noting the potential benefits for residents across various urban centers.
The newly formed partnership will continue to explore avenues in waste management and energy generation, with a focus on advancing sustainable urban development practices across the region.
