Electoral Commission Pledges Peaceful, Credible By-Election in Adjumani West

Voters in Adjumani West Constituency can anticipate a secure and transparent parliamentary by-election on Thursday, September 17, 2026. The Electoral Commission (EC) has pledged its commitment to upholding the standards of a credible electoral process.

EC Chairperson Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama emphasized that the commission will be actively monitoring all 114 polling stations throughout the constituency. To further enhance the integrity of the vote, Biometric Voter Verification Kit (BVVK) machines will be utilized. These machines will scan voter details before ballots are issued and again during the vote counting process, thereby bolstering the credibility of the election results.

All necessary election materials, including 114 ballot boxes, have already been delivered to the Adjumani district. The arrival of these materials was reportedly witnessed and documented by the candidates and their representatives, ensuring transparency from the outset.

The returning officer for the Adjumani District Electoral Commission, Christine Akao Eunice, urged the two contesting candidates and their supporters to maintain peace and adhere to the law before, during, and after the polling day. The By-election is a contest between independent candidate Gasper Draga and NRM’s James Leku Pilli, following the withdrawal of two other candidates.

Security agencies have also indicated their readiness to ensure a peaceful election. The Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Emmanuel Okware, stated that extensive engagements with stakeholders have been held to prepare for polling day. The Regional Police Commander for North West Nile, SSP Joseph Mwesige, echoed these sentiments, warning against any unlawful actions and assuring the public of a maintained law and order during the voting process.

A total of 51,438 registered voters are eligible to participate in this election to fill the vacancy left by the late former MP Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali. Adjumani West Constituency spans Adjumani Town Council and four sub-counties, with elections to be conducted across 114 polling stations.
