Cricket Cranes Eye ILT20 Final Berth with Crucial East African Derbies Ahead

The Uganda national cricket team, affectionately known as the Cricket Cranes, stands just two victories away from the ILT20 Continent Cup final. However, their path forward is paved with critical East African encounters, beginning with a match against hosts Rwanda on Thursday, followed by a clash with undefeated Kenya on Friday.

Uganda secured a vital five-wicket win against Botswana on Wednesday, boosting their points tally to 10. This places them second in the standings, trailing Kenya by two points. With Rwanda also in contention on eight points, Uganda cannot afford any slip-ups in these concluding round-robin fixtures.

The victory over Botswana, where wicketkeeper batsman Charles Musemeza starred with a brisk 39, provided much-needed momentum after their earlier defeat to Kenya. Uganda’s bowlers, including Matthew Musinguzi, Joseph Baguma, and Cosmas Kyewuta, were instrumental in restricting Botswana to 119.

In the chase, Robinson Obuya’s aggressive 32 and Musemeza’s steadying 39, complemented by Gerald Olipa’s quickfire 19, ensured Uganda reached the target comfortably, despite a four-wicket haul from Botswana’s Katlo Piet. Captain Riazat Ali Shah and Kenneth Waiswa sealed the win.

The Cricket Cranes now turn their attention to Rwanda, who are fighting for their own qualification hopes. Following that, they face the formidable challenge of Kenya, the tournament’s only unbeaten side. Uganda’s strong net run rate gives them an edge, but securing the necessary points in these upcoming derbies remains paramount.
