Adjumani West By-election Set for Thursday as Two Candidates Vie for Parliament

The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed its readiness to conduct the Adjumani West parliamentary by-election scheduled for Thursday, September 17. All necessary voting materials have been received and preparations are underway for their timely distribution to the constituency’s 114 polling stations.

Adjumani District Returning Officer Christine Akao Eunice stated that the materials would be transported to ensure polling commences at the legally mandated time of 7 am. Biometric voter verification machines will be employed to confirm voters’ identities before they cast their ballots.

EC Chairperson Simon Byabakama highlighted that the process included an update of the national voters’ register from August 5 to 7, with the updated register displayed at all polling stations for verification. Nominations took place on September 7 and 8. The by-election is necessitated by the death of Gen Moses Ali.

Initially, four candidates vied for the seat. However, the EC has officially acknowledged the withdrawal of independent candidates Ben Anyama and Patrick Tandrupasi. Consequently, only NRM candidate James Leku Pili and independent Gasper Draga will appear on the ballot.

The campaign period, which concluded on September 15, was noted by Mr. Byabakama as largely peaceful, with no reported incidents of violence. Candidates are now permitted only to engage in final briefings with their polling agents.

Regional Police Commander Joseph Mwesige assured the public of adequate security measures to maintain order during the voting process. The constituency comprises 51,438 registered voters across five sub-counties and town council areas. Attention now turns to polling day, where residents will elect their new parliamentary representative.
