Western Uganda Lawyers Encouraged to Adopt AI for Enhanced Justice Delivery

Lawyers in Western Uganda are being called upon to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and other cutting-edge technologies into their practice to significantly boost the delivery of legal services and broaden access to justice.
This encouragement came during a Uganda Law Society (ULS) Techfest workshop held in Mbarara City. The event provided legal professionals from the Western Region with an introduction to new technologies and their practical applications in the legal field, under the theme “Digital Democracy: Advancing Access to Justice, Innovation and Ethical Governance through Technology.”
The Techfest is a nationwide campaign by the ULS to foster digital transformation in the legal sector. Following the Mbarara session, similar workshops are planned for Gulu and Mbale, culminating in a national event in Kampala from September 17-18.
ULS Vice President Anthony Asiimwe stressed that technology is now indispensable for lawyers, playing a central role in legal service delivery and the administration of justice. He highlighted the Techfest’s role in exposing lawyers to innovations that can enhance efficiency and accessibility in legal services, aligning with the ‘Radical New Bar’ ideology.
Asiimwe commended the Judiciary’s progress in digitizing court processes, particularly the Electronic Court Case Management Information System (ECCMIS), which has streamlined interactions between lawyers and courts.
Meanwhile, Tony Galandi Kiire, Managing Partner of Diamond Advocates, advocated for local innovation in legal tech, suggesting that current tools often lack adaptation to Uganda’s specific linguistic and cultural contexts. He also raised crucial ethical considerations regarding AI, such as the potential for misinformation and accountability for erroneous advice.
Justice Gelase Kwemara Kafuuzi of the Mbarara High Court Circuit echoed the call for technological adoption, noting the Judiciary’s own strides in digitalization through virtual sessions and electronic case management, which have improved efficiency and accessibility.
