UPDF Military Police Launch Nationwide Road Traffic Crackdown

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Military Police Brigade has launched a significant nationwide operation aimed at enforcing road traffic regulations and restoring order on Ugandan roads. The crackdown, which commenced this week, will see vehicles operating without proper documentation, including number plates and valid licenses, being impounded.
According to Colonel Chris Magezi, the Acting Director of Defence Public Information, the operation specifically targets vehicles with covered number plates and the illicit use of sirens. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the Military Police and the Uganda Police Force, with the goal of ensuring full compliance with traffic laws by all road users.
Col. Magezi emphasized that no one will be exempt from the operation. Security personnel, government officials, and members of security agencies found violating traffic laws, driving without valid permits, or using illegal sirens will face arrest and prosecution. This includes those with covered number plates, even if they belong to government ministries or security agencies.
Furthermore, the operation extends to civilians found in possession of military clothing or items within their vehicles. Civilian vehicles found carrying military jackets, whether openly displayed or concealed, are subject to impoundment. Offenders in this category could face arrest and potential prosecution before a court martial under the UPDF Act.
Dubbed “Operation Tekeleza Sheria,” the campaign is expected to continue indefinitely. The UPDF is urging all motorists to cooperate with security officers and adhere to directives given at checkpoints to ensure road safety and discipline.
