UPDF and Police Unite for Nationwide Crackdown on Illegal Vehicles

The UPDF Military Police Brigade, in collaboration with the Uganda Traffic Police, has launched a significant nationwide operation aimed at curbing traffic violations. Dubbed ‘Operation Tekeleza Sheria,’ the crackdown commenced in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area and is set to extend across the country.

The operation specifically targets vehicles operating without proper number plates, those that are unregistered or unlicensed, and motorists who intentionally cover their vehicle’s identification plates. This enforcement drive will also extend to vehicles belonging to security personnel and government agencies that are found to be in violation of these regulations.

Col Chris Magezi, the acting Director of Defence Public Information for the UPDF, emphasized that drivers caught flouting these rules will face arrest and prosecution in courts of law for gross violations. This initiative signals a more stringent approach to traffic law enforcement, ensuring that even members of security forces are held accountable for their adherence to road regulations.

Furthermore, the operation will also address the illicit transport of military stores in civilian vehicles. Any civilian vehicle found carrying military items, such as jackets, will be subject to impoundment. Owners or drivers involved in such activities risk arrest and court-martial proceedings under the UPDF Act 2025.

The UPDF has not set a definitive end date for ‘Operation Tekeleza Sheria,’ indicating that it will continue until further notice. The military has urged the public to cooperate fully with the security agencies during this period of intensified enforcement.

This coordinated crackdown underscores the authorities’ commitment to improving road safety and combating the unauthorized possession of military-related items nationwide.
