Ugandan Basketball Community Mourns Talented Guard Ronnie Kasewu

The Ugandan basketball fraternity is deeply saddened by the loss of Ronnie Kasewu, a prominent guard who graced the courts for Kyambogo Warriors and the national team, the Silverbacks. Kasewu passed away following injuries sustained in a hit-and-run accident in Mukono.

Kasewu spent his entire club career with the Kyambogo Warriors, establishing himself as a formidable force in the domestic league. His skillful play was instrumental in the Warriors’ National Basketball League championship victories in 2009 and 2012. His individual brilliance was further recognized when he was named the 2009 NBL Most Valuable Player and the USPA Basketball Player of the Year.

Renowned for his versatility and creative gameplay, Kasewu famously adapted his style of play after a childhood injury to his right hand, becoming a dominant left-handed player. His signature crossover dribble was particularly feared by opponents, showcasing his exceptional ball-handling abilities.

Coaches and former teammates remember Kasewu for his immense talent and impact on the game. Gad Eteu, who coached Kasewu during the 2009 championship season, recalled his “deadly crossovers” and “immense talent.” Stephen Okias, a former teammate, spoke of a bond that transcended the sport, describing their shared journey with the Warriors as a “brotherhood.”

Kasewu’s legacy extends beyond his individual achievements and championships. He was a key figure in a generation of Warriors players who elevated the standard of Ugandan basketball. His contributions and the memories he created on and off the court ensure his name will be a significant part of Ugandan basketball history.
