Uganda Pledges Deeper Parliamentary Ties with Pakistan

Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament, Jacob Marksons Oboth, has signaled a strong intent to bolster diplomatic and legislative connections with Pakistan. During a bilateral meeting with the Speaker of Pakistan’s National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, in Cape Town, South Africa, Oboth designated Pakistan as a priority partner for deepening ties.

This commitment, made during the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, highlights a strategic focus on legislative cooperation in areas such as trade, economic development, capacity building, and educational exchanges. Both leaders underscored the importance of moving beyond symbolic gestures to create tangible opportunities for their citizens.

Speaker Oboth emphasized the historical linkages and the significant contributions of the Pakistani community to Uganda’s economy, viewing them as a solid foundation for expanded engagement. He stated Uganda’s readiness to foster a relationship that offers greater opportunities for both nations’ people. Oboth also stressed the role of legislative bodies in driving national development and advocated for the use of parliamentary tools to advance international trade and economic diplomacy.

The discussions also touched upon shared global concerns, with Speaker Oboth reaffirming Uganda’s dedication to combating climate change. He acknowledged Pakistan’s leadership in this sphere and commended their innovative approaches, such as paperless initiatives within their parliament and educational systems.

Recalling past collaborations, including Uganda’s support for Speaker Sadiq’s election as President of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association in 2014, the leaders expressed a desire to build on these historical successes. Speaker Sadiq welcomed Uganda’s commitment and shared Pakistan’s foreign policy focus on Africa, suggesting that numerous potential opportunities exist for mutual benefit through Memorandums of Understanding.

Speaker Sadiq extended an invitation to Speaker Oboth to visit Pakistan in the near future to further direct engagement with the Pakistani Parliament and government officials.
