Forces from Uganda and Somalia, operating in the Lower Shabelle region of Somalia, have committed to strengthening their security coordination and cooperation. This joint effort is designed to improve the safety of local communities and consolidate the region’s stability.
The agreement was formalized during a joint security meeting held in Buulo Mareer. Attendees included local administrative officials, military commanders from various contingents, and representatives of partner forces actively engaged in the area.
The discussions focused on the prevailing security situation in Kontunwaarrey District and its adjacent territories. A key outcome was the emphasis placed on fostering closer ties and collaboration between the security forces, local governance structures, and the communities they serve.
Ibrahim Haji Hussein, the District Commissioner of Kontunwaarrey, underscored the importance of this integrated approach. He urged local leaders, elders, and youth to actively participate in efforts to maintain stability and ensure the protection of their communities.
Lieutenant Colonel Don Naijuka, Commanding Officer of the UPDF’s 143 Infantry Battalion, highlighted the crucial role of ongoing teamwork among all security elements. He stated that “The continued cooperation and teamwork among the security forces are critical to strengthening stability and protecting communities in Lower Shabelle.”
The meeting facilitated dialogue between commanders and representatives from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), the Somali National Army (SNA), and the specialized Danab Brigade.
Major Faarax, Commanding Officer of the SNA’s 62nd Infantry Battalion, expressed appreciation for Uganda’s sustained involvement in Somalia. He acknowledged Uganda’s significant contributions to peace and security initiatives across the African continent, noting a shared commitment between the two nations to promoting peace, security, and the well-being of African communities.
