Uganda Advocates for Enhanced Regional Action Amidst Horn of Africa Crises

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in charge of Regional Affairs, Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo, speaking at the 74th Extraordinary Session of the IGAD Council of Ministers in Djibouti, emphasized the critical need for unified approaches to cross-border issues.

Kasolo stressed that IGAD member states must prioritize conflict prevention, foster inclusive governance, build climate resilience, and deepen economic integration. He also highlighted the necessity of strengthening coordination among regional bodies to effectively tackle these multifaceted crises.

Key proposals included the enhancement of early-warning systems, facilitation of the free movement of people, capital, goods, and services, and the expansion of regional trade corridors. These measures are seen as vital for promoting stability and prosperity across the Horn of Africa.

Furthermore, Uganda called for a thorough examination of the root causes of displacement and an assessment of the broader implications of conflicts in the Middle East, particularly any potential spillover effects on the region.

The nation also advocated for improved financial management within IGAD, demanding predictable funding, transparency, and accountability. Equitable geographical representation in the organization’s leadership and technical roles was also put forward.

Reaffirming Uganda’s dedication to regional peace and security, Kasolo pointed to the country’s sustained contributions to peace support operations in Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan. He also underscored the importance of regular meetings of the IGAD Council of Ministers to maintain robust oversight and continuous regional engagement.
