Tooro Supreme Council Endorses Prince Kijanangoma as Successor, Muhoozi Urges Swift Coronation

The Tooro Supreme Council, known as Orukurato rw’ensanju, has formally ratified Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the designated successor to the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. The confirmation took place during a crucial sitting at the Rukurato Chambers in Muchwa, presided over by Speaker Julius Mwirumubi.

This pivotal decision followed a formal introduction of Kijanangoma to the council by Omusuuga Charles Kamurasi, the head of the Babiito royal clan. Kamurasi announced that Kijanangoma had been chosen by a 21-member Babiito succession committee and will assume the throne as Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I. Preparations for his ascension are reportedly underway, with the Babiito clan expected to announce the coronation date soon.

Kamurasi emphasized that the succession process is essential for the continuity of the Tooro institution following King Oyo’s demise. He also noted that any individual or group with objections to Kijanangoma’s selection is free to pursue legal channels.

The council’s meeting also addressed the prior disruption of the Rukurato Chambers, which had prevented the council from convening shortly after King Oyo’s death. Kamurasi highlighted that Tooro customs mandate the supreme council to convene upon the king’s passing for formal communication and funeral arrangements.

Adding to the proceedings, Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba publicly endorsed Prince Kijanangoma, urging for a swift coronation and discouraging any legal challenges that might delay the process. He declared, “The new Omukama of Tooro is His Majesty Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I. Long may he reign.”

This confirmation comes amid existing disagreements within the royal family regarding King Oyo’s succession, with some members reportedly citing a will that should guide the process, a claim contested by the Babiito clan who assert adherence to Tooro customs.
