StarTimes UPL: Bul, Villa & Others Challenge Traditional Hierarchy

The StarTimes Uganda Premier League is witnessing an unprecedented shift in its early stages, with established giants faltering and surprising contenders emerging. The conventional order appears to be upended in this new 34-game season, where newcomers are holding their own against established clubs.

Reigning champions Vipers SC have had a particularly difficult start, failing to secure any points due to early fixture disruptions from continental commitments. This has opened the door for others, most notably BUL FC. The Jinja-based club has been in formidable form, winning all three of their opening matches to sit atop the league standings with nine points. Their impressive run includes a commanding 4-1 victory over Ntungamo, setting up a highly anticipated clash with fellow perfect starters, Blacks Power.

Blacks Power has also impressed, securing a 2-1 comeback win against Maroons. Their encounter with BUL FC promises to be an early litmus test for both sides and a gauge of the league’s unpredictable nature. Meanwhile, NEC FC, despite an initially strong showing with successive wins, had their perfect record halted by Mbarara City, settling for a goalless draw. They now face URA aiming to stay within touching distance of the leaders.

SC Villa, a club with a rich history, is also showing signs of resurgence under coach Zeljko Kovacevic. The Jogoos have quietly accumulated seven points from their first three games, with victories over URA and Express, and a draw against Kitara. Their recent 2-0 win against Express has boosted morale, and they are expected to continue their strong start against newcomers Kigezi Homeboyz.

This season has already served notice that no result can be taken for granted. Struggling KCCA FC, a 13-time champion, faces a winless Kataka FC, desperate for a turnaround. Express FC will look to bounce back from their defeat to Villa when they host Kitara. Defending champions Vipers SC make their return to league action against Ntungamo, seeking to reassert their authority and signal that the title race is far from over. However, for now, the league summit remains open to challengers.
