The Roosevelt Africa Trail, an initiative aiming to transform historical ties into economic opportunities, has officially entered its implementation phase. This significant step follows high-level engagements in New York that secured crucial backing from the United States, paving the way for broader mobilization involving Congress, businesses, and the public.
The initiative draws inspiration from Theodore Roosevelt’s 1909-1910 expedition across East Africa with his son Kermit and a Smithsonian scientific team. This historic journey through present-day Kenya and Uganda resulted in a wealth of scientific specimens, photographs, and field records.
The modern Roosevelt Africa Trail seeks to capitalize on this historical connection to foster development in tourism, trade, conservation, technology, and investment, creating a bridge between East Africa and the United States. “This is Trade Over Aid in practical terms,” explained Mr. Joshua Sentongo, the Trail’s director of business development and strategy. “As East Africa gains tourists, infrastructure and investment, American companies gain customers, contracts and new markets. The opportunity works in both directions.”
A recent meeting at Uganda House on September 10 brought together representatives from Uganda, the United States, Kenya, and South Sudan. Participants agreed on concrete steps to convert the historical links established by Roosevelt’s expedition into tangible opportunities for trade, tourism, investment, and technology.
Pastor Robert Kayanja, conveying a message from President Museveni, urged Uganda to expedite the commercialization of this historical connection, emphasizing the importance of branding historical events for tourism, trade, and investment before the year’s end.
The US Representative to the UN Economic and Social Council, Ambassador Dan Negrea, pledged support, announcing that the Roosevelt Africa Trail would be the inaugural entry in the US “Deals Library,” a framework designed to connect the Trail with American investors, financial institutions, and companies under the “Trade Over Aid” strategy.
Ambassador Godfrey Kwoba, Uganda’s Chargé d’Affaires to the United Nations, noted that the initiative has evolved beyond its historical roots to become a practical platform for economic engagement, connecting Uganda, the US, Kenya, and South Sudan. A subsequent meeting in Washington, D.C., hosted by a North Dakota congressional delegation, is expected to further discussions on trade, tourism, and investment with representatives from the involved countries.
