The Masaka High Court is preparing to hear a significant election petition concerning the Masaka City Woman Member of Parliament seat. Rose Nalubowa, the candidate from the National Unity Platform (NUP), has lodged a challenge against the victory of Justine Nameere, the incumbent who represents the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Lawyers representing Ms. Nalubowa, under the leadership of Mr. Samuel Muyizzi, appeared before Justice Bernard Namanya on Tuesday. They informed the court that their primary objective is to scrutinize the legality of the recount process that ultimately led to Ms. Nameere’s declared win.
The court has officially scheduled September 22 as the date for this crucial hearing. This case is part of a larger wave of election disputes being processed across the country following the recent parliamentary and local council elections.
Masaka, a region encompassing nine districts and a city, has emerged as a focal point for election petitions, with five judges specifically deployed to handle the substantial caseload. This indicates the significant volume of electoral challenges arising from the region.
