The National Rugby Sevens Championship is heading for a thrilling conclusion after Kobs secured a crucial victory at the Kyabazinga Sevens. In a dramatic final, Kobs overturned a significant 19-5 halftime deficit against the resilient Rams to clinch the title with a 24-19 win.
This victory marks Kobs as the fifth different circuit winner this season, highlighting the competitive nature of the championship. Rams, who had shown impressive form throughout the tournament, including stunning wins against Walukuba and Heathens, were on the brink of another upset before Kobs rallied.
Kobs demonstrated their championship pedigree with a strong performance, navigating pool games against Rams, Mbale Elephants, and Mongers, before overcoming Black Pirates in a tight semifinal. However, the final saw them trail significantly at the break, with Rams extending their lead through tries from Hosanna Opileni and Yusuf Semakula, plus a late effort from Bakari Muhoozi.
The momentum shifted dramatically in the second half. Kobs, spurred by key drives and capitalizing on a crucial sin-binning for Rams’ Hashim Kabogoozo, scored four unanswered tries. Shafik Okole and Brian Wandera crossed the whitewash in quick succession to complete the comeback.
This win is Kobs’ first circuit title since the Tooro Sevens in July 2023 and has significantly tightened the championship standings. Platinum Credit Heathens still lead with 90 points, but Kobs are now just eight points behind, with Stanbic Black Pirates in second place. The race for the overall crown will now go down to the final event, the Kabaka Coronation Sevens, with Heathens needing a strong performance to secure the title.
