Ibanda Grapples with Surge in Murders as Leaders Demand Enhanced Security

A wave of violence has gripped Ibanda Municipality, with local authorities and residents expressing grave concerns over a spate of murders. The latest incident, the killing of 68-year-old Wilson Turyasasira, a bicycle mechanic, brings the total number of reported homicides in the area to nine within a two-month period.

Turyasasira was reportedly attacked by unknown assailants on Monday night while returning to his home in Rushaka III Village. His body was discovered the following day in a forested area a short distance from his residence, along the Ibanda-Kamwenge Road.

This latest death has intensified fears among the community. Local leaders have highlighted that this is the third murder to occur in the immediate vicinity, underscoring a pattern that residents find deeply unsettling. “Residents are living in fear because this is the third murder reported in this area. We need increased security patrols to protect people and prevent more deaths,” stated Frank Beyendaza, the Rushaka III Village Chairperson.

Beyond the need for more visible security patrols, leaders are also questioning the responsiveness of police to emergency situations. Concerns have been raised that delays in responding to distress calls could be providing criminals with opportunities to evade capture.

Community officials are urging security agencies to conduct more regular operations in areas identified as crime hotspots. “We are asking security agencies to increase their presence and carry out regular operations so that criminals do not take advantage of the situation,” said Posius Tumukunde, the village publicity official.

In response to the escalating crime, Ibanda Resident District Commissioner Godfrey Mbetegyereize has appealed to residents to foster closer collaboration with security forces. He emphasized the importance of promptly reporting suspicious activities and sharing any information that could aid in crime prevention efforts.

“Security agencies and communities must work together to identify the causes of these increasing murders and prevent further loss of lives,” Mbetegyereize urged, stressing that community vigilance and timely reporting are crucial for strengthening security and safeguarding lives.

Residents are now advocating for sustained police presence, community awareness campaigns, and quicker response times to emergency calls, particularly in areas perceived to be more vulnerable to criminal activities. The community seeks a concerted effort to address the root causes of the rising murder rate and restore a sense of safety.
