Gwaaka Shatters Beach Woodball Record, Eyes 2028 World Cup

Brian Gwaaka has rewritten the record books for beach woodball in Uganda, achieving a remarkable 32 strokes over 12 gates. This performance at the second Beach Woodball Circuit, held at Bunjakko Beach in Mpigi District, surpasses his previous record of 34 strokes.

Gwaaka, representing Kampala International University (KIU), expressed his delight at the new milestone, stating that his focus was on playing his best game, with the record being a welcome outcome. The previous record holder was retired player Geoffrey Towong.

In the competitive men’s senior category, Edison Twesigye of Mubs secured the second position with 37 strokes, followed by KIU’s Bridge Byamukama in third place with 38 strokes.

Looking ahead, Gwaaka highlighted his ambition to represent Uganda on the international stage, specifically targeting a spot on the national team for the 2028 Beach Woodball World Cup. The Uganda Woodball Federation’s local circuits are integral to preparing athletes for these global competitions, which now follow a four-year cycle.

In the women’s senior division, Sanyu Mirembe of KIU claimed the gold medal with 40 strokes. Denise Nanjere from Kyambogo University took silver with 42 strokes, and Shakirah Nagudi, also from KIU, secured the bronze with 46 strokes.

Nanjere, a notable figure in woodball, acknowledged Mirembe’s strong performance and reaffirmed her commitment to continued competition and improvement as she prepares for future tournaments.
