Ex-MP Latif Ssebagala Declares Support for Museveni or His Successor in 2031

Latif Ssebagala, formerly the Member of Parliament for Kawempe North, has declared his intention to support President Yoweri Museveni in the 2031 presidential election, should the incumbent seek another term. Ssebagala, who now identifies as an independent politician after leaving the National Unity Platform (NUP), made these remarks during a recent appearance on Sanyuka TV.

He elaborated that his vote in 2031 would be cast for Museveni if the President is on the ballot. Furthermore, if Museveni decides not to run, Ssebagala indicated he would support whoever the President endorses as his successor. This includes explicitly stating he would vote for First Son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, if Museveni designates him.

Ssebagala urged the opposition to critically evaluate its current political strategies and determine if they genuinely reflect the interests of the Ugandan populace. He suggested that the opposition should reflect on whether its actions are resonating with the people and whether it possesses credible candidates capable of challenging the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

“We need to first understand whether the opposition is taking the right direction,” Ssebagala commented, adding, “You also need to ask yourself whether the Ugandans we are fighting for are getting what they want.”

He pointed to the recent election results, where the NRM secured a majority of local government positions, as evidence of the party’s enduring grassroots support. Ssebagala contended that opposition parties cannot assume that general dissatisfaction with the government automatically translates into support for their platforms.

“According to my observation, there is no one in the opposition capable of taking over power,” Ssebagala stated, casting doubt on the current opposition’s readiness to lead. His comments come amidst early political discourse about the 2031 elections, fueled in part by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s own declaration of presidential ambitions.
