Tooro Kingdom is mourning the loss of Prince David Kijanangoma, who died after a year-long struggle with cancer. The announcement was made by Crown Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, who was recently named the successor to the late King Oyo. The Assistant Musuuga of Tooro Kingdom confirmed the passing and indicated that further details regarding funeral arrangements would be communicated.

Prince David had been receiving treatment at the Uganda Cancer Institute in Mulago, Kampala, for stage three throat cancer. Earlier this year, his family launched a public appeal for funds, seeking approximately Shs700 million for specialized treatment in India, as his personal savings had been depleted by ongoing medical expenses in Uganda.

His death occurs during a complex period for the Tooro royal family, which is navigating succession disputes following the recent demise of King Oyo. Prince David himself had a history of controversy within the kingdom, having previously expressed ambitions to become king and engage in disagreements with the late King Oyo. He was even arrested in 2015 on charges related to alleged intentions to overthrow his cousin.

Despite past conflicts, Prince David had publicly declared peace with his brother and had reportedly been involved in reconciliation efforts, including meetings with President Museveni. His death, occurring shortly after the burial of King Oyo who also succumbed to cancer, underscores the challenging times facing the Tooro monarchy.
