Adjumani West Parliamentary Race Narrows to Two Candidates

The Adjumani West parliamentary seat election is down to a final two contenders: independent candidate Gasper Draga and NRM flag bearer James Leku Pilli. With 51,438 registered voters set to participate, the election follows the passing of the former MP, Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali. Initially, seven individuals vied for the position within the NRM primaries, but two, Patrick Tandrupasi and Ben Anyama, have since withdrawn and publicly endorsed Leku Pilli, consolidating the field.
President Yoweri Museveni recently campaigned for Leku Pilli, emphasizing the benefits of aligning with the ruling NRM government for accelerated development and improved service delivery in Adjumani West. He highlighted government programs like the Parish Development Model, noting that Adjumani District has already received approximately Shs23 billion, urging beneficiaries to utilize these funds productively for wealth creation and increased household incomes.
NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong praised Adjumani’s hospitality towards refugees, calling it a demonstration of Pan-Africanism. Meanwhile, Draga is focusing his campaign on education, skills development, and commercial farming, aiming to equip the youth with practical abilities and boost household incomes. Conversely, Leku Pilli has prioritized infrastructure projects such as the Laropi Bridge, the establishment of Adjumani Municipality, and upgrading the Ciforo Health Centre.
The Electoral Commission has called for peace and adherence to the law from all parties involved before, during, and after the polling day on Thursday, September 17, 2026. The outcome will determine who fills the vacancy in the 11th Parliament for Adjumani West.
