Uganda to Participate in 2027 Invictus Games After Royal Clarification

Uganda’s participation in the 2027 Invictus Games has been reinstated by Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba. This decision comes after a crucial telephone conversation with Sir Clive Alderton, Principal Private Secretary to King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

Sir Alderton conveyed that King Charles III has no objections to Uganda’s involvement in the games and encouraged the nation to move forward with its preparations. The clarification from Buckingham Palace addressed concerns that had previously led Gen Muhoozi to announce Uganda’s withdrawal.

According to a statement from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), the King was reportedly “moved by General Kainerugaba’s sensitive consideration” of his opinion. This interaction has paved the way for Uganda to resume its plans for the international sporting event.

The Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry in 2014, is a platform for wounded, injured, and sick military personnel and veterans to compete in adaptive sports. Uganda joined as a participating nation this year, marking its debut and becoming the first East African country to do so.

Earlier, Uganda’s participation was put in doubt when Gen Muhoozi announced a withdrawal, citing a desire to protect the nation’s relationship with the British Monarchy. This followed communication suggesting the Invictus Games were considered a private charity rather than an official Royal Family initiative. Gen Muhoozi had emphasized that Uganda’s participation should not be seen as a sign of opposition to King Charles III, whom the country deeply respects.

With the latest clarification, the UPDF is expected to recommence preparations for sending a Ugandan team to the Birmingham-hosted games.
