Tragic Bushenyi Crash Claims S6 Student and Another Road User

A devastating road crash on the Bushenyi-Ishaka road has resulted in the deaths of Arnolin Sasiraabo, a 20-year-old Senior Six student of Kyamuhunga Secondary School, and 22-year-old Brilian Atwongiryeho. The incident occurred on Sunday evening when a trailer reportedly attempted to overtake the motorcycle on which the victims were passengers.
Derrick Kwasa, the 23-year-old motorcycle rider, survived the collision but is currently in critical condition and receiving treatment at Kampala International University Teaching Hospital. Eyewitnesses, including Peninah, the proprietor of Divine Drug Shop at St. Kagwa, identified Sasiraabo through her scholastic materials. She described the trailer as speeding and suggested the driver may have been intoxicated, also pointing to the narrowness of the road as a significant contributing factor.
Edward Aligo, a medical student at KIU, echoed concerns about the road’s condition, noting that the stretch near St. Kagwa has become a notorious accident black spot. He recalled a previous trailer rollover just two weeks prior and appealed to the government to widen the road to accommodate the heavy traffic, particularly trailers heading towards Kasese and the Democratic Republic of Congo border.
Bushenyi Regional Police Commander, SSP Martin Okoyo, confirmed that the trailer driver is in police custody, and both the trailer and the damaged motorcycle have been impounded at Bushenyi Police Station. The bodies of the deceased were transported to KIU Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination.
This tragic event has intensified calls from local residents for urgent government intervention to improve road safety along the Bushenyi-Ishaka route, which they believe is inadequate for current traffic volumes.
