Security forces in Uganda have affirmed their readiness to ensure the safety of all pilgrims embarking on the journey to Mwalimu Julius Nyerere’s resting place in Butiama, Tanzania. The commitment was articulated by SSP Julius Gobolo, Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander for Operations, during a coordination meeting with pilgrimage organizers.

This year marks the third iteration of the pilgrimage, a significant event aimed at honoring the legacy of the former Tanzanian President and a key architect of East African unity. Preparations are reportedly on track, with organizers expressing confidence in the arrangements.

Adding a cultural dimension to this year’s journey, traditional performers, known as ‘ddigi,’ will accompany the pilgrims, offering entertainment along the travel routes. The procession commenced from various points in Kampala, including Kingdom Kampala and Parliament, before converging at the Central Police Station (CPS) Kampala.

At CPS Kampala, SSP Gobolo met with representatives from the pilgrimage organizers, Africa Masheriki, and assured them of robust security measures. These measures will encompass protection throughout the entire journey and along all designated routes. “We are fully prepared to provide security to the pilgrims throughout their journey and along all the routes they will use,” Gobolo stated.

The pilgrimage serves as a vital platform to reflect on Nyerere’s enduring contributions to regional integration and development. The collaborative efforts between security agencies and organizers underscore the importance placed on facilitating a safe and meaningful experience for all participants.
