Prime Minister Andy Burnham has cancelled several planned engagements for Monday and Tuesday following the death of his father, Roy Burnham.
Burnham had previously spoken publicly about his father’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease, citing it as a significant motivation behind his drive to reform adult social care services across England.
The Prime Minister was scheduled to host a business leaders’ meeting at Downing Street, which has now been postponed. He had earlier revealed that his father, due to his condition, was unaware of his son becoming Prime Minister in July.
Reflecting on this, Burnham had told The Times newspaper that it was a “sadness” his father wouldn’t know of his achievement, calling it a “whole family achievement, although he doesn’t know it.”
Burnham also shared a heartwarming anecdote, mentioning that care home staff had shown his father footage of him entering Downing Street, an act he described as “wonderful.”
He frequently referenced his father’s experience when pledging reforms for adult social care, stating his ambition to help “my dad and the millions like him.” Burnham expressed being “overwhelmed” by the dedication of care workers who supported his father.
Burnham often described his father, a former telephone engineer, as a source of “laughter, love and support” during his upbringing with his mother, Eileen, in Culcheth, Cheshire. In his 2024 book, ‘Look North,’ he reflected that neither of his parents attended university but were determined that their three sons would have the opportunity, a sentiment stemming from their own potential in a different era.
